Currency Pound sterling
The pound sterling (£ GBP), unofficially called the British pound, is the official currency of the United Kingdom. It was first put into circulation as far back as 1158 by the English king Henry II. Initially, pounds sterling were convertible into silver, and from 1816 to 1914 into gold as well. The United Kingdom, then a member of the European Union, negotiated a clause allowing it to remain outside the eurozone. One pound is divided into 100 pence.
