Currency South African rand

The South African rand (R ZAR) is the official currency of South Africa. It was introduced in 1961, replacing the South African pound. The rand is also legal tender in Lesotho, Eswatini and Namibia, where it circulates alongside local currencies pegged to it at a fixed rate.
